100 Years Young
This week, everyone at Guisborough Manor has been celebrating Gladys 100th birthday including receiving a card from the King and Queen.
Happy 100th Birthday Gladys , a truly loved lady.
Gladys was born in Coolham, Sussex on the 23/11/1924 . Gladys was the last child born into the family and being the youngest was spoilt rotten. Gladys had two older brothers and one sister who nick named Gladys “Micky” after Micky Mouse.
Gladys remembers having a happy childhood even though it was tough in war time. “Everybody looked after everybody” she said. Gladys met her future husband Frank , who originated from Ormesby, at a dance in Coolham and it was love at first sight. Frank and Gladys wed and started their family, becoming parents to Michael, Ann and Jane. Sadly Michael passed away at a young age.
During this time Frank and Gladys returned to Middlesbrough, eventually settling in Ormesby. Life continued, holidays were enjoyed, Crete, Italy, Rhodes, America to name a few. The house was filled with fun and laughter, the kettle was always on and the cakes always baked.
Gladys had enjoyed her jobs as an auxiliary nurse and a dinner lady and loved helping people. Sadly Frank passed away, the children had flown the nest and Gladys needed a little extra care moving into Guisborough Manor. Gladys family has grown and she is a proud grandmother of six and great grandmother of four. She looks forward and enjoys their visits.
Gladys says that she has “seen a lot of changes throughout my life sometimes for the better, sometimes not so much however there’s not a lot of people around that can say they have seen what I have seen!!”
