Care home versus home care - making the right decision for you

When the time comes to make decisions about care for you or a loved one, the choice between a care home and home care can be difficult.

Home care might seem like the most familiar or simplest option; however, care homes provide a range of benefits that can enhance the quality of life, offer professional support and ensure constant care.

Here’s why a care home could be the better choice for long-term care and wellbeing.

1. 24/7 professional care and support

One of the biggest advantages of a care home is access to constant professional care. In a home care setting, while this is familiar, carers only usually visit at certain times, which can leave long gaps where those in need may be alone. In a care home, trained staff are available at all hours, meaning immediate assistance with any medical needs, mobility support and personal care.

2. A safe environment

As people age, the risk of falls and medical emergencies increases. In a home care setting, there may not always be someone available to help in the case of an emergency. Care homes are designed with safety in mind, offering accessible facilities, trained staff and quick emergency response systems that can provide peace of mind for both residents and families.

At St Martins Care, we consider safety and response to falls seriously. In the past, we have been a part of trials that introduce new and improved responses to falls.

3. A social life and community

Loneliness is a big concern for elderly people, especially for those people who live alone. Care homes create a sense of community where residents can form friendships, take part in social activities and engage in group events if they want to. Regular social interaction is known to improve mental health, reduce depression and increase wellbeing.

4. Nutritious meals

Care homes provide residents with nutritious meals specific to their dietary needs. In contrast, home care often relies on the individual or their carer to prepare meals, which may not always be practical or nutritious. Care home dining makes sure that residents receive the nutrients they need to stay healthy and strong.

5. No household responsibilities (unless you want some)

Maintaining a house can become hard with age. Cleaning, cooking, laundry and home maintenance can be overwhelming, even with home care assistance. In a care home, these chores are completely taken away, allowing residents to focus on enjoying life without the stress. When you can no longer cook and clean like you previously could, this could be an indication that a care home might be best for your circumstances.

However, we are huge advocates for supporting our residents with “Lived Experiences” so, if you would still like to get involved with household responsibilities, such as your own cleaning or laundry, we’re really happy to support you with that as we believe it enriches lives and gives people a real purpose whilst living in a care home environment.

6. Specialist care for complex needs

For those with Dementia, mobility issues or other health conditions, specialist care is essential. While home care does provide medical support, care homes are equipped with expert staff trained to handle complex medical conditions all of the time, ensuring that residents receive the highest standard of care tailored to their specific needs.

Care homes at St Martins Care offer different specialised care including Nursing and Dementia.

7. Engaging activities

Care homes provide a variety of activities that encourage physical and mental stimulation, for example, arts and crafts, gardening, exercise classes and music therapy. These activities help residents to support their mental ability and give them a sense of purpose and this can be difficult to achieve in a home care environment.

In each of our care homes, many social events and activities take place to increase social interaction and engagement. You can see some of the activities here.

8. Predictable and cost-effective care

While home care may seem like a more cost-effective option at first glance, the sum of costs over time from carers, house alterations, medical equipment and emergency support can quickly add up. Later down the line, care homes can provide an all-inclusive service that can be a more predictable and cost-efficient solution in the long run.

Making the right choice for a better future

While home care may be your current choice for care or your first port of call, you can always transition to a care home when the time is right.

Choosing the right type of care for you is not just about medical support - it’s about ensuring a higher quality of life, safety, social connection and peace of mind. With 24/7 professional care, engaging activities, nutritious meals and a vibrant community, a care home can provide an environment where you or your loved one can thrive.
