Washington Manor spreads festive cheer with its very own Santa
The spirit of Christmas is alive at Washington Manor Care Home, which has transformed into a winter wonderland complete with its own Santa’s Grotto. The heartwarming activity, created by care home manager Wendy McIntyre, is designed to bring joy to children visiting their older relatives and provide a festive lift to the home’s residents.
Santa’s back in action
Stepping into the boots is 77 year old Robert Duggan, a resident of Washington Manor. Robert is no stranger to the role of Santa as he played the part for local schools before moving to the care home.
The Grotto isn’t just about Christmas - it reflects a broader commitment across all St Martins Care homes. Ensuring that residents can continue to engage in activities they love, even after moving into a care home, is at the heart of the mission.
Robert’s enthusiasm for stepping back into his Santa role is a perfect example of how St Martins Care helps residents rediscover joy in familiar activities - bringing smiles to residents and visitors alike.
A free festive treat for the community
The Grotto is completely free for families to visit. Wendy explained:
“Going to see Santa can be so expensive for families, and this is an opportunity to come and see him for free and get a little gift.”
On Saturday 21st December 21 from 2-5 pm, local children are invited to meet Santa at the care home. The event aims to ensure that every child, regardless of their financial situation, can enjoy the magic of Christmas.
Spreading the word on BBC Radio Newcastle
The Grotto has already had its first visitors, with preschool children singing Christmas songs and sharing their Christmas lists with Santa.
The heartwarming story of Washington Manor’s Christmas Grotto has caught attention beyond the local community. Wendy McIntyre recently spoke about the initiative during an interview on BBC Radio Newcastle, where she shared the inspiration behind the project and the joy it’s bringing to residents and visitors.
